48Hour Launch Focused On Mobile App Development

48HL

The Company Lab is hosting their fourth (or is it fifth) edition of the popular 48Hour Launch event the weekend of March 30th. The tried and true process includes the following steps: entrepreneurs pitch ideas, form teams, work feverishly over the course of two days, make a final presentation in an attempt to win prize packages. It’s an intense experience for everyone involved.

For this round, Co.lab has introduced a new twist: mobile app development that enhances a user’s experience while in Chattanooga. Ten teams will be admitted into the competition allowing for a much faster paced showcase when final presentations are made.

The event draws many local entrepreneurs, coders, hackers, designers, marketing specialists who often jump in to help one or more teams. The camaraderie among team members is reminiscent of what you may have experienced when working into the night on a school project with fellow students. Friendships form fast and many remain strong after the event.

“We have a fantastic group of students and entrepreneurs already committed to coming…now we are pushing to round out the troops” says Sheldon Grizzle of The Company Lab. He suggests the following ways to plug into the event:

1) Pitch an idea! Submit your idea here.
2) Attend 48HL and help a team build their concept. Register here.
3) Learn how to build a mobile app using Titanium. Learn more here.
4) Attend Demo Night to see what the teams build. April 1st at 6PM at The Mill.

Members of the business community should, at the very least, attend Demo Night to sneak a peek at what the tech entrepreneurship community is up to. It’s also a great place to make connections with movers and shakers in this emerging space.

For the full on startup experience nothing compares to joining a team at inception and seeing the idea through the entire 48 hours to the final presentation at Demo Night. For some, it’s a way to recapture the entrepreneurial enthusiasm that may have been chipped away from the daily grind of running a business.

48Hour Launch recap

48hl

Like a whirlwind, 48Hour Launch blew threw Chattanooga last week. However, unlike a destructive weather pattern, this was a collaborative effort that spurred conditions for the perfect creative storm. Entrepreneurs with business ideas converged on the old YMCA building eager to attract talent  in the form of designers, web developers, marketers, copy writers, attorneys and others willing to lend a hand.

The premise: pitch an idea, build a team, build a business, make a presentation and potentially walk away with $5,000 to go further – all within a 48 hour period. Sound intense? It was! Sound fun? I can say from personal experience is was loads of fun. But what about the practical? Why devote your time? Why volunteer your skills?

Those pitching ideas had an obvious incentive, but what about those who participated to help out? What was the payoff of those who brought their skills to the event to help others with their dreams? These are the questions that need to be answered in order to attract more talent to future events.

Thirty hours into the event we caught up with DJ Trischler to hear firsthand about his experience, what project(s) he worked on and what his takeaways from the event were.

Richard Hardin’s Cumberland Signal Labs snags top prize at 48Hour Launch

CSL Flight Hub

In what some call the Entrepreneur Olympics, 48Hour Launch is a contest for entrepreneurs to pitch their idea, organize teams of specialists, establish a workflow and make refinements all while consuming gallons of caffeinated beverages as they work all day and long into the night assembling their startup concept. The culmination of which is distilled into a presentation before a panel of judges and a live audience. Not all ideas garner a team. Not all teams make it till the end. Those that do feel a huge sense of accomplishment and regardless of the outcome walk away with newly acquired skills and processes. One entrepreneur and his/her team walk away victorious with cash and donated business services to continue working on their idea.

For showing up, putting themselves on the line, following through the entire weekend and making presentations all those involved are winners. Below is the winning demo by Richard Hardin of Cumberland Signal Labs. He assembled a fabulous team of specialists to produce a winning presentation. Since then CSL has gone on to be selected as one of the 50 Coolest Startups on the Planet by Global Entrepreneurship Week and won the Early Innovator Award presented by the Chattanooga Technology Council
